About this tour
The Golden Buddha, known locally as Phra Sukhothai Traimit, is a remarkable solid gold Buddha statue housed within Wat Traimit temple in Bangkok. This seated Maravijaya Attitude statue stands as one of the most iconic and revered attractions in the city, drawing visitors from around the globe.
Statue and History
The Golden Buddha statue is a seated Buddha Rupa crafted entirely from solid gold, weighing an impressive 5.5 tonnes and standing nearly 10 feet tall. Its origins trace back to either the Sukhothai (1238–1438) or Ayutthaya period, a period of significant historical and cultural development in Thailand. Historians speculate that the statue was likely created during a time when cities faced the threat of Burmese invasions.
Discovery
For nearly 200 years, the statue was disguised under a layer of stucco and colored glass, possibly to conceal its true value from invaders who might mistake it for a mere pagoda decoration. It wasn’t until 1955, during its relocation, that a piece of the stucco fell off due to an accident involving a crane. Overnight rainwater washed away more of the plaster, revealing the statue’s pure gold composition to astonished monks and locals.
Temple Complex
Wat Traimit, where the Golden Buddha resides, features a striking four-story marble structure housing the statue. The Phra Maha Mondop, adorned with gleaming white walls and a golden spire, serves as the main sanctuary for the Golden Buddha. Visitors can explore the temple’s exquisite craftsmanship and serene ambiance, reflecting the Sukhothai architectural style.
Museum and Exhibition
Adjacent to the Golden Buddha statue is the Phra Buddha Maha Suwanna Patimakorn Exhibition, a museum within the temple complex. Here, visitors can delve deeper into the history and significance of the Golden Buddha. Exhibits include remnants of the stucco and colored glass that once concealed the statue, offering insights into its preservation and eventual revelation.
